Hi. I'm Mark Hinch. I'm a backend developer. Apparently. It all sort of just happened to turn out that way, and now after quite a few years programming in the web I have found myself specialising in something it just turns out I'm quite good at.

I've worked on sites both big and small, pretty and hideous, short- and long term. I would like to say I've seen it all, but that would be a lie. I've seen a lot then, I guess. But I'm always looking for more.

I've worked for other people’s companies for about 10 years now. I've done things from creating the menus for the movies that came out on those silly little Playstation Portable discs (UMDs) to creating simple little URL shorteners, little blogging platforms, custom APIs, fully-fledged CMS systems, entire backend administrative tools, crowdfunding sites and eventually full-on web platforms serving millions of users a month. I've also (remotely) managed quite large server clusters serving millions of requests to hundreds of thousands of users.

I've been fortunate enough to have worked with some incredibly talented and creative people. The web is growing, as we all know, and it feels like I've grown organically with it so far. So, now I'm looking for whatever is out there that can show me that I've really not seen anything at all yet.

Recent & notable work

Below are some notable sites I've worked on in the last few months & years.

De Correspondent

Agency Momkai
Role Lead backend developer
Period Dec. 2012 - Feb. 2015

De Correspondent is a Dutch-language, online journalism platform that focuses on background, analysis, investigative reporting, and the kinds of stories that tend to escape the radar of mainstream media because they do not conform to what is normally understood to be 'news.'

It was launched in September 2013 after raising more than 1 Million Euros from 15,000 donors in just eight days' time, setting a crowd-funding world record in journalism.

I was the lead backend developer for both the crowdfunding platform and the platform itself; and, with my colleagues, developed the core system and its APIs for both the funding site and the platform itself.

Lowdi is a portable wireless speaker that connects to any device equipped with Bluetooth, allowing you to bring your music with you wherever you go. Lowdi was a collaborative venture between Linkeet, a French electronic products supplier, and Momkai.

The Lowdi site was a platform for selling the product. It was developed as a standalone website and was fully integrated with a payment platform to accept payments. It was then plugged into an existing fulfillment system. I also developed the backend administration which was used to monitor all users, orders and their payments, statuses and summaries.
